From Canada into the US that is. Publicly traded Canadian local search provider ZipLocal is heading into the US market. According to the press release:
ZipLocal Inc., a Canadian-based online local search directory, today announced the US launch of ZipLocal.com. With the US market opportunity being 20 times larger than in Canada IAB Canada 2007 IAB USA May2008), and the company’s experience and knowledge in this sector, ZipLocal is well-positioned to expand into this lucrative marketplace.

just did a search for coffee in my zip and their data is old and incomplete. they list a bunch of diedrich coffee locations that closed and converted to starbucks almost 2 years ago. also a good sized regional chain (“it’s a grind”) in my hood is missing.
then there’s the very wide fixed width layout of the results page… which is going to prevent those adsense ads from being seen by a good portion of viewers who don’t maximize their browsers or have lower screen res settings…
and look what happens when you direct navigate and don’t include the www:
http://ziplocal.com/
500 internal server error.
Yikes. Lots of work ahead of them to penetrate a crowded directory market…
