It’s “M” to the “Q.” Mapquest has been redesigned front to back, top to bottom. Witness the new Mapquest logo:
Here’s the new look and feel for the site:
One search box, better-looking maps, more functionality and more content are all part of this total redesign. I’ve written about it at SEL and you can also read more about the process and the product on the Mapquest blog.
I spoke to Mapquest GM Christian Dwyer about the redesign at some length last week. He was clearly excited and says there are going to be lots of great things coming from the AOL-division in the Tim Armstrong era. I had predicted that Mapquest would outsource to Bing. I guess I was totally wrong.
The new site is much cleaner, there are few adds and overall it’s much more usable. Here are a few things you can do uniquely at Mapquest, which are very useful:
- Do multiple searches and see all those listings on the map at the same time
- Page between search queries without losing previous searches
- Click icons at the top of the map for quick access to selected categories of information (e.g., Hotels, Restaurants, ATMs, Gas)
Sadly I was told that Mapquest Local is going away. I thought it was a very innovative property but I guess there’s just not enough usage to justify its continued existence.
Here’s a feature tour of the new Mapquest:
In general I like it. But play with it yourself and tell me whether you like it or whether you think the changes aren’t radical enough.
