Facebook Places Launches

I’m live blogging the launch event at SEL. I’ll write something more reflective and thoughtful later tonight.

Like Google Places SMBs will be able to “claim” Facebook Place Pages. Obviously there are lots of implications for SMBs, location-based advertising and third parties that tap into the APIs.

This is a direct competitor to the Google Places API, which initially is for check-in applications.

Update: I’ve done a quick analysis on SEL this morning – Making Sense of Facebook Places

I just updated the Facebook iPhone app and there’s the big PLACES icon right in the center. I click it to start exploring and Facebook asks if it can use my location. Sure! Next page that loads says, “This feature will be available in your region soon. Thank you for your patience.”

    Fail.
